Alternative Proteins

For those people who can not take animal protein due to various reasons, have to find alternative sources of protein in their meals. We have plenty sources of plant proteins that ready to use.

Here are some examples:
Tempeh (Soya based) is a fermented food made by the controlled fermentation of cooked soybeans with a Rhizopus mold (tempeh starter). Tempeh has been a favorite food and staple source of protein in Indonesia for several hundred years.

Vegetarians and vegans find the structure and protein easily digestible and delicious. Tempeh has a firm texture and a nutty mushroom flavour.

Normally tempeh is sliced and fried until the surface is crisp and golden brown or tempeh can be used as ingredient in soups, spreads, salads and sandwiches. You can also crumble it and sauté it like ground beef.

Tofu (Soya based) is made from soybeans. It's high in protein and calcium. A staple of Asian cuisines for hundreds of years has recently become popular in Western vegetarian cooking. Tofu was first used in China over 2000 years ago.

The oldest written reference of tofu appeared in China at about A.D. 1500, found in a poem called "Ode to Tofu" by Su Ping.

  1. Great post, here's just a little info from the other side.
    One has to remember that there is a great difference between fermented soy products and non-fermented soy products.

    Soy has been found to;
    . Increase thyroid damage, especially in women
    . Increase the risk of breast cancer in women, brain damage in both sexes, and cause abnormalities in infants
    . Contribute to thyroid disorders, especially in women
    . Promote kidney stones
    . Weaken your immune system
    . Cause severe, potentially fatal food allergies

    There is a great book called: "The Whole Soy Story" written by, Dr. Kaayla Daniel. This book gives a lot of great information.

    As I mentioned above stick to fermented products like tempeh, miso, natto and soybean sprouts. Thes have been found to increaae memory, produce probiotics (good bacteria), etc.
